The show goes on: broadcasting continues throughout
construction
ABC Radio’s Triple J had grown and diversified, leaving its
headquarters in Ultimo, NSW requiring a total upgrade. Additional
working space was required, as well as filming areas for the
stations television arm, JTV. The network also needed lounge areas
for staff and guests. Triple J could not interrupt broadcasts or
other functions, so SHAPE designed and managed the fitout as a
carefully staged project. With staff in full occupation, the
project was executed over five zoned stages to ensure business
continuity.
Development of design and management of logistics
As the project’s Design and Construct Manager, the SHAPE team
was involved in developing architectural and services details. For
example, the building was subject to an alternate fire solution, so
our team incorporated the fire engineer’s recommendations into the
existing design. Another challenge was the relocation of Triple J’s
entire music library, containing around 25,000 CD’S and 5000 vinyl
records. SHAPE planned and executed a highly detailed, methodical
relocation, enabling Triple J staff to easily locate any recording
at any time. This project won a Master Builders Association (NSW)
award in the category of 2008 Interior Fitout between one and two
million dollars.
